For six weeks between December 2001 and January 2002 I lived in a three bedroom house with five kids and their two parents in the town of Alajuela, Costa Rica near San Jose and the airport. It was my first international trip (besides Baja but that doesn’t count growing up in So Cal) and I will never forget it. I was there for a Language Immersion program and living with a host family to work on my fluidity to prepare for a semester in Chile studying business at the local state university.
During my six weeks there I had the opportunity to travel on the weekends with my classmates to different beaches to surf and see as much of the country as possible. My last week was spent solo in Mal Pais and Santa Theresa rooming with this really cool Swedish guy I met on the ferry.
One of my best memories was from an afternoon surf sesh when the bar on the beach was getting ready to party all night long and where playing their music so loud you could hear it in the lineup. The special thing was not that you could hear the music but what music they were playing – The Beatles. My favorite band of all time. I was in heaven.
On this trip I was using a brand new digital camera. All two megapixels of the Canon Powershot S300. Point and shoot power baby! Even had a one inch LCD screen to look at the pictures after you took them – revolutionary! . . . thanks Dad.
This picture is my Costa Rican family plus neighbor less the father who was at work.

This picture is me with my board bag and backpack out in front of the place in Mal Pais.
